Is AI Going to Replace Your Team? The Honest Answer Nobody Wants to Give.

I'm tired of watching people avoid this question. Let me answer it directly, without the PR spin, without the fear-mongering, and without the naive optimism.

Both sides of this debate are lying to you. The "AI will take all the jobs" camp is selling fear. The "AI just creates new jobs" camp is selling comfort. The truth is more complicated and more important than either narrative.

Let me give you my honest view, built from actually building these systems and watching how they affect real businesses.

Which jobs will AI replace?

Tasks, not jobs. Almost no job is entirely one thing. A marketing coordinator's job involves creative thinking, strategic judgment, relationship management, and also: scheduling social posts, reformatting documents, compiling performance data, sending templated emails. AI will handle that last category โ€” reliably, tirelessly, and for a fraction of the cost.

But the marketing coordinator who is freed from 3 hours a day of admin and can spend that time on strategy and creativity and client relationships โ€” they become more valuable, not less.

The jobs that are genuinely at risk are the ones that are almost entirely execution of repetitive, rule-based tasks. Data entry. Basic report generation. Routine customer service responses to common queries. Invoice processing. Some of that work will shrink significantly. I won't pretend otherwise.

Which jobs can AI not replace?

Judgment in ambiguous situations. AI is excellent at defined parameters. It struggles profoundly with the genuinely novel, the politically nuanced, the ethically complex. Those situations still need humans.

Relationships. People do business with people they trust. AI can support relationships โ€” by making sure things don't fall through the cracks, by enabling faster responses, by providing better information. It cannot build trust.

Creative insight. AI can generate content. It cannot originate a genuinely new strategic direction, a breakthrough creative concept, a product innovation. It can assist the person who does those things.

Accountability. Someone has to be responsible. AI systems can be governed, but the decision to deploy them, the parameters they operate within, the values they embody โ€” those require human ownership.

What does AI mean for jobs in South Africa?

We have a very specific unemployment challenge in this country. I think about it seriously. My honest position: automation that makes businesses more efficient and more competitive creates conditions for business growth that generates employment at a higher level. A business that automates its admin and grows 30% needs more people โ€” but people doing different work.

The risk isn't automation. The risk is businesses that fail to compete and downsize or close entirely. Those job losses are less visible than automation job losses, but they're just as real.

Build better businesses. Build them with AI. Grow faster. Create more of the right kind of work.

That's my answer.
